Usability Lab Reflection

Throughout this whole process, I developed an intrinsic motivation to partake this usability lab experiment. Therefore, to begin with, I had to book a slot, on the 23rd day of November, 2018; with the help of the toddle link. My colleague researcher [name] and I performed the experiment in the usability lab which ran from 19th to 390th of November, 2018. The main objective of the experiment was to identify how different people read and perceive various structured texts; with the help of eye-tracking tools such as Tobii software, and eye tracking machine. Throughout the experiment, I realised the importance of data analysis dissertation help in understanding the results. The entire experiment period gave me a platform and opportunity to experientially learn concepts related to the functionality of the eye tracking device, specifically the Tobii Technology.

The instructor and guide gave an overview of the experiment prior to actual conduction, concerning the duration taken to complete the experiment. Thirty minutes was deemed enough time, with a series of three attempts to demonstrate the task according to the instructor, the experiment findings would be displaced on the PC screen. Additionally, she mentioned that the devices would process our perceptions procedurally, while tracking our motion during the experimentation.

The experiment shortly after we recorded our personal details including educational background, native language, and age. The eye tracker machine was used to follow our eye movements while recording the signals on the PC screen. The instructor them asked each of a series of eight questions which were to extract answers from the presented text. I searched the answers through the text, after reading all the questions stepwise. I began scrutinizing the answers after reading through the questions, to find insights of their respective answers. After an approximated 30 minutes, the instructor verified the responses I had given to the questions. Out of the eight questions, I managed to scores even. Relative to my instructor, I was not badly off because that was a pass.

The whole experiment was conducted on the premise of one main aim; which was to explore the ability of the human eye to perceive, or solve a given problem such as locating answers to a text question. The experiment sought to determine the ability and rate at which an eye is able to figure out and process answers to the particular questions that were presented. The experiment in my opinion proved fundamental in the establishment of a criterion for designing impressive eye-catching content such as posters which the eye can perceive faster and easily.

While experimenting, it is vital that the constant distance between the eye and the eye tracking device; to maintain the consistency of results extracted. This entails one of the precautionary measures which we had to take into consideration to ascertain the results we intended to extract were authentic and consistent to realize our results.

Notably, in relation to this experiment; two important factors including mother tongue and age greatly impact the results. Age is an essential factor because it distinguishes the perceptions within generations, say; generation Z and other more ancient generations. Whereas concerning language, the first language will determine the rate at which a person internalizes and extract meaning to given questions for the submission of answers. The English speakers took little time exploring answers to the text questions because they were advantaged the questions were asked in their native language.

Attending the usability lab rendered me with a platform of exposure to the eye tracking devices and their usability in a wider spectrum of designing posters that can easily capture readers’ attention. It was a new experience on my side, yet very informative.

Poster presentation Reflection

During the poster presentation, we collaboratively worked in a group to come up with a poster on home automation and usability. We began by defining the meaning and concept of Internet of Things (IoT) and settled it as being a gadget or device connected to the internet to receive or disseminate information. Such devices as we realized; could be in forms of tracking systems, driverless vehicle, smart light, smart watch, refrigerator or a thermostat. IoT devices to our understanding have the capacity to collect and share information amongst themselves or to humans. Progressively, were explored the written literature and discovered that IoT technology harnesses desk-based approach together and share information.

Consequently, we unraveled our objectives of the study and developed as intended to establish the functioning of IoT applications and interfaces. We brainstormed on the related advantages and limitations of IoT interfaces. Notably, we learnt that IoT is essential in the monitoring of business security, while reducing human efforts in such operations. IoT also is efficient because it improves the decision making- processes concerning security systems. As discussed, the challenges accompanying ToT; as discussed were found to be its ability to induce complexity in the security management systems, on bandwidth, regulations and standards. In a future perspective, we reflected on the abilities of ToT, to contribute in the realization of smart cities, improved healthcare, induce interconnectedness of a series of things as in the case of spacious data to impact positively decision making processes. Eventually, on our poster we concluded with a full realization that in the contemporary world, IoT has made life easier in sending and receiving information, concerning cloud, and device functionality.

After the presentation, Bola commented on our entire presentation and provided a feedback, suggesting that our poster design would be consistent, with a distinct section for a title, which ought to be written in a clear font; and a balanced alignment and white space. She also noted that utilizing bullets and images makes the poster appealing to the eye. Additional, she commented on the need for a balanced use of colors, and the use of APA referencing style. All in all, she assented to the poster as a good work.

Concerning the former poster, Bola also commented positively concerning the presentation and is overall group management. The title according to her was precise and informative. However, she noted with a concern the need for a visible font that will appeal to the eye. Beneath the clear content, she said, there should be use of bullets and avoid too many words.
