What are you planning to learn?

Describe what learning you are planning to carry out. What you need to learn may be new knowledge, skills, or a new attitude or approach – anything that you think will help you as a student pharmacist. You should be as specific as possible.

You should explain why this learning is relevant to you as a student pharmacist and how it will affect the people using pharmacy services. If you don’t think it is relevant or will have a significant beneficial impact on anyone, you might want to consider why you are planning to carry out and record this learning.

During my module for Foundations and Pharmacy Practice PH1132, there were several calculations for dosage measurement that would be used in everyday Pharmacy practice. I am planning to improve these skills to the level required for a student pharmacist as well as a fully qualified pharmacist. The main areas I would like to focus on would be dosage and concentration calculations. Learning the skills of doing these calculations would make the patients feel more at ease with the process creating a safe and reliable experience.

As a student pharmacists, this learning is relevant as it has helped me gain relevant knowledge in all kinds of medicine. This will help boost my main goal which is helping people by preventing and treating diseases. The skills developed during my pharmacetical study can be utilised anywhere in the world. This learning will also equip me with scientific knowledge on further research and development opportunities in the fied of medicine. Since this proffession is patient centered, pharmacetical knowledge will help me provide medical advice to patients in cases where symptoms are less severe. In learning pharmaceutcals calculations I am able to realise the importance of accuracy which when miscalculated, can adversely affect the patients and cause serious side effects.

How are you planning to learn it?

It is important for you to consider a range of options for achieving your learning across the breadth of your CPD entries. Focus your planned CPD on those activities that are relevant to, or likely to have the biggest impact on, the people using pharmacy services.

Since pharmacetical information is central to a patient, I tend to master all drug characteristics, mechanism of action, toxicity, pharmacodynamics, effectiveness and safety by improving on pharmaceutical calculations.

To be able to correctly calculate dosage and concentration calculations, I will be using the Foundations and Pharmacy Practice PH1132 Calculations Quizzes to learn how to complete all types of Pharmaceutical Calculations. My plan is to also use the recommended reading provided by the university, which will help with my understanding of dosage and concentration calculations. I will also use worked examples to solve exampes given to me.

In order to understand drug measurements and avoid medication errors such as wrong dosage or ommitted medication, I intend to understand and master this different measurements used for drug dosages and be able to convert between different units of measurements such as volume, weight of drugs and percentages of the drugs per 100 parts.

The knowledge and skills developed during this learning process was important in prescribing drugs to patients. I was able to understand the essential skills that are needed when calculating the dosages. Videos and recordings from the second semester clearly explained the fundamental basis of pharmaceticals and calculations involved in administering dosage to patients. This acted as a guide in revision of first semester’s work. I gained confidence in dealing with problems in dosage administration and required concentrations.

Subsequently, after the completion of research and the calculations, I was finally able to apply them in my Chemistry exam. Application of practical knowledge learnt in class helped me acquire an indepth understanding of pharmacology and therapeutics, physiochemical properties of drugs and correct dosage administration. This complex and varied knowledge qualifies one to make proffesional judgements relating to medicine.
