Crisis Response: SPECCS Framework and Global Cooperation

Question 1:

The SPECCS framework refers to the social, physical, emotional, cultural, cognitive and physical elements or issues being experienced by an individuals or group during any situation. On analysing the given scenario based on the SPECCS framework, it can be identified that the young footballers and their coach are able to face emotional and physical challenges while being trapped in the cave for nearly ten days without food and basic everyday needs. They were without food and drink is evident as their backpacks along with cycle were found near the entrance of the cave without any form of food supplies being left for them to have while being trapped in the middle of the cave (SCMP, 2018). Thus, the situation informs that the football team and their coach are going to face physical challenges of being hungry and exhausted while being trapped in the cave as they had no supplies to help them to remain physically fit. This is because having proper diet is the basic need for humans to remain physically fit and resolve hunger (Ellis-Petersen & Weaver, 2018). However, the rescues team found the footballers and their coach to be undisturbed and physically strong while finding them in the cave on the ninth day. This is because one of the former coaches previously informed the young footballer and their coach regarding the way to meditate and use certain techniques to survive in a place being trapped for longer time without food or water (Premium Official News, 2018). Therefore, the previous training helped the coach and the footballer to survive the situation and resolve physical challenges.

The rescue team comprised of various volunteers from all over the world such as China, Australia and others as seen in the video (Galegroup, 2018). This informs that an emotional cause where many innocent lives are required to be saved is able to influence the mentality of all individuals irrespective of their country to act compassionately and in a united way to resolve the issue. As mentioned by Wei et al. (2017), people trapped in places often show anger, frustration and other forms of negative emotion. This is because they have lack of link with the environment or their family as well as feel fear of dying without help. However, the footballers and the coach were found to be emotionally calm and resilient and expressed being alert and active while found in the cave. It is evident from the video where in response to the rescuers they immediately communicated without anger or frustration and the rescuers even appreciated them for their response by calling them very strong (Asia News Monitor, 2018). This may have happened because they have the hope to be rescued and the hope may have come by keeping themselves calm through implication of their previous training to cope with adverse situation from the coach who was a monk. Moreover, the daunting emotional strength of the footballers was also helpful for them to come out of cave through dividing by receiving only 30min crash course on diving from the British diver.

Question 2:

The issue of poor diet has influence the oral health and hygiene of the individuals in Scotland. This is evident as in 2014 it is been reported that 32% of the children in the primary 1 category are suffering from tooth decay issues (Govt, Scot, 2018). Thus, the dental professional and the government officials in Scotland are working hard for tackling the problem to ensure proper health of the individuals through the proper intake of dietary supplements. As mentioned by Di Fiore et al. (2016), maintaining a healthy diet rich in calcium is able to control tooth decay to most extent. This is because the calcium present in the foods is absorbed in the body which then utilises the calcium in maintaining proper health of teeth. As criticised by Simon et al. (2016), the calcium present in food is often seen to mix with the plaque and sticks to the teeth. This helps in improving the strength of the teeth in adults by protecting them from acids which causes decay. Thus, this also helps to rebuild the enamel of the tooth at the place where it is damaged ensuring good oral health of individuals. Therefore, adding calcium-rich food in diet would help the individuals in Scotland to have the ability to cope with tooth decay to most extent.

The biological factor responsible for tooth decay and bad oral hygiene include family history, medical condition and dietary habits. As mentioned by Care (2018), family history results individuals to develop dental caries. The regular check by the physicians is required in this case to avoid the issues. The dietary habits of the babies and toddlers to bottle feed sugary drinks make them vulnerable to face bad oral health and hygiene as oral acids are formed which results in tooth decay (Park et al. 2016). The individuals under certain medication which contains increased amount of sucrose are prone to tooth decay and improper oral health (). This is because the sucrose leads to create effective environment within the mouth for the development of bacteria to cause tooth decay. The socio-economic issues in Scotland that results in poor diet causing tooth decay and bad oral healthy include differences in social class, lower hygiene maintenance, improper intake of food and others. As asserted by (), people in the lower social class are more prone to smoke and take increased amount alcohol instead of having healthy diet. This is because they have lack of education regarding the dietary ingredients to be taken to ensure their proper health. According to Dental Health (2018), 25% of individuals in higher (1-2) social class reportedly practices four positive behaviours such as eating more than 5 serves of vegetables in a day, avoid smoking, drink moderately and be physically active in comparison to 21% in middle (3-4) social class and 8% in lower (5-6) social class. The practising of all the four positive behaviours helps to ensure proper calcium content of the body which is the key nutrient required to maintain proper oral health and avoid tooth decay.
