Relationship between personality and group formation

Impact of personality in group formation

Personality is one of the main factors in formation of an effective group where there are different theories such as Mayer Briggs 16 personality and Belbin personality through which it is possible to understand different personalities which contribute in successful group formation. As per Mayer Briggs 16 personality, there are major factors such as Extraversion, Introversion, sensing, intuition, thinking, feeling, judging and perceiving which represents the personality of the individual (Mayer, 2017). Extraversion is effective for group formation as compared to being introvert as extraversion is helpful for the individuals to be talkative, describe the thoughts, enjoying being centre of attention, tend to work out with different ideas, thinking creatively and create fast paced environment. Hereby, the personality type of extraversion is beneficial for formatting an effected group where the individual can communicate with others and share new ideas for working better (Eubanks et al., 2016).

Sensing and intuition are also effective personalities of the individual and both are important for group formation as sensing helps to focus on realities, pay attention on facts, describe things with practical application and intuition provides a scope to the individual to imagine the possibilities and enjoy different ideas and concepts. In this regard, both the personalities of sensitive and intuition help the individual to cooperate with each other and express and share each other’s ideas and knowledge for developing an effective group where all the members can work collaboratively by generating new ideas and strategies. Thinking is also appropriate for making effective decision by and feeling is effective for developing personal values and creating strong relationship with each other which is important for developing an appropriate group within the institutions. Judging and perceiving are also necessary for developing proper team where the team members can make planning, understand the rules and practice of their work and collaborate with each other for better outcome. Hereby, the personalities of extraversion, judging, sensing, intuition, feeling and thinking are helpful to develop an effective group within the workplace.

In addition to these, Belbin’s personality is another effective theory through which it is possible to understand different personalities and its impacts on the group formation, where the personalities are such as plant, resource investigators, coordinator, shaper, monitoring evaluation, team worker, implementor. completer finisher and specialist (Lynch et al., 2018). The personalities of resource investigator and coordinator are effective for forming a group where the individual try to promote decision making, empower every team member, sharing ideas and strategies, identifying opportunities and enhancing communication through which the team members can develop an effective team successfully by ensuring collaboration and teamwork. Additionally, the personalities of teamwork, monitoring evaluation and specialist are also effective for sharing knowledge and skill and motivate others to be cooperative for working together for achieving the team objective. Hereby, the personalities of team workers, empowering others, cooperative decision-making practice and coordinator are effective to form an appropriate group. In this context, personalities of the individual is helpful for successful formation of the group and in the British culture and society, the personalities of extraversion, sensitive, judging and thinking are beneficial, through which the individual try to be communicative and cooperative with other team members for empowering others, sharing goals, managing commitments, enhancing shared values and decision making practice and enhance team work practice through formation of the group.

Group formation and role of personalities

Through Tuckman’s 5 stages theory, it is possible to understand the way of group formation where there are five stages such as forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning through which the individual can develop an effective group (Kiweewa et al., 2018). In the forming stage, the team members try to identify the goals and objectives of forming the group and the leader plays a crucial role here to develop an effective team through handling team cohesion. In the storming stage, the individual focus on improving communication among the team members for sharing their knowledge, feelings and understanding which is effective to develop appropriate team. The team members establish their roles and share their knowledge for successful brainstorming so that the team task can be addressed well. The norming stage is beneficial for developing team dynamics, improving tam motivation to support each other. In this regard, the personality of respecting each other, sharing values and interactive with each other are advantageous for the individual to form an appropriate group with successful cooperation and communication. In performing stage, it is necessary to create suitable environment, imporve flexibility to work and developing trusting atmosphere and in this regard the personalities of extraversion, shared vision and goals, sharing individual’s knowledge and skill and sensitive are effective to develop the team with respect and integrity where all the members respect each other’s value and develop trusting environment to perform better with cooperation and team work.

Additionally, the in the adjourning phase, the team members try to assess their performnace and monitor their contribution, and the personalities of decision-making practice, monitoring evaluation, team workers, specialist, critical thinking are effective where the team members try to analyse the present situation and contribution of others and develop appropriate strategic planning for maximising the team goals and objectives. The personalities of coordinator, team workers, resource investigator, shaper and implementor are also advantageous for forming an effective group where the individual aim at storming the group through interacting with others, understanding each other’s values and respecting each other (Mayer, 2015). Openness, extraversion and curiosity to identify new opportunities or strategic planning are also helpful where the individual try to communicate with other team members for seeking their feedback and sharing their understanding so that it is possible to utilise the problem-solving skill and critical thinking skill for developing effective decision to meet the team goal. Hereby, the personality of the individual is a contributing factor for developing an effective group where for example in the British culture and society, people prefer in forming group through respecting each other, showing positive attitude, communicating with others, sharing their knowledge and skill which in turn helps to enhance communication and cooperation.
