A Personal Statement For In Banking And Finance

PERSONAL STATEMENT

With my 5-year undergraduate education in universities from China and the Netherlands, more than two years of work experience in a bank at Amsterdam, and motivated by passing CFA Level 1 on June 2017 through self-study, I am finally encouraged to write the personal statement to apply for a master of science in Banking and Finance at King's College London.

Banking and finance is a course that provides a depth understanding of the banking industry as well as the finance industry. This course utilizes a wide range of skills from modern economics which include subject such as asset and liability management, financial institution and market as well as accounting to solve most challenging misery in the banking and finance industry. Most of my interest to apply for banking and finance in the king’s college London was motivated by great bankers like Paul Warburg who generated the need of strong banking platforms in United States which greatly influenced the creation of Federal Reserve among other great scholars in the world of banking.

Being not as excellent as the peer at school by making a great effort on my study, I felt myself inferior during my whole childhood. But, I still dreamed to get educated in a great university. Fortunately, I got an offer from a university in the Netherlands. And from that moment on, I have completely changed my mind and perspective about studies. The board study pattern motivated me how to learn by myself instead of accepting it passively; my tutor would encourage and instruct me to be questionable about knowledge that I preview before lessons. The process of study gives me confidence in dealing with obstacles as well as develops my ability to challenge the problems I find in my life and this keeps me willing to study more.

For instance, taking my study in “Financial Accounting” has greatly made my life different as I learned various skills that are important in my life especially in my career. I have learned self-motivation in everything regardless of the conditions, time management and self-confidence which am sure are special tools in banking and finance. Am sure that this institution will greatly equip me with the best skills in banking and finance as well as leadership skills that are essential in the career. I believe the University of King's College London is the best place to advance in my career since it has the best enabling environment for one to study as well as engage in research.

This motivation incredibly gave me an official job when I finished my whole-year internship at Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, S.A. Amsterdam Branch after graduation where I became a Manager Assistant in the Risk Management Department. In this position, I have gained vast experience in banking and finance. However, not all the financial problems I meet at work I can solve with by the knowledge area from my major. And like I mentioned before, confidence, rooted at my heart, is powerful that strengthened me to study finance on my own, in order to apply this to my daily work. Therefore, from January 2018, I studied to self-study CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Level 1 after work. It took me fully half a year on preparation for CFA Level 1, because I had no idea for most of the financial area, and derivatives, alternative investment as well as portfolio management were like a nightmare for me to learn at the very beginning. Though thinking to give up or delay the exam date during the process, I still enjoyed figuring out questions by various calculations and analysis.

I would like to say, the self-preparation process of CFA gradually developed my ability of financial or banking analysis to a small extent, but it didn’t make me satisfaction about what I achieved and what I was capable of at work. To the opposite, it truly expanded my horizon on finance and investment.

The wider world outside of the tiny area you are too short-sighted to focus on, the more exploration you desire to have. For me, I need to have a direction. The program can ordinate me to the right academic way, make a solid theoretic foundation and give me plenty of financial resources. I believe postgraduate would be a milestone in my life to enhance my ability, position myself in the high level and colour my whole experience.

Being accepted at King's College London will be a greater motivation in my life and this will make me work even harder than I did in my Chartered Financial Analyst level 1 to achieve my dreams and goals in the finance industry. I certain that the university equips learners with the best skills in research, thinking as well as analytical with focus on the major theoretical, practical management, taxation and banking regulations which are essential in my field of study. Apart from curriculum activities, it is my hope that I will contribute positively to the institution volleyball club.
