Creating a Personal Development Plan

Introduction:

Personal development plan can be referred as an action plan that is designed to develop professional as well as personal skill, improve knowledge and shape existing skill. This study will discuss this plan in four part. In the first part it will discuss career goal, in second part it will demonstrate the current reality, in third part options of progression will be discussed and in fourth and final part the SMART objectives will be discussed. Finally, the study will make a suitable conclusion in terms of highlighting the main aspects of entire topic.

career goal:

I have fascination about three specific career goals which are as follows:

Registered nurse:

I wanted to become registered nurse from healthcare assistant, as the profession of registered nurse is full of several scopes such as financial scope, professional opportunities, career opportunities and social as well as educational developmental opportunities. As mentioned by Lejeune et al. (2018), the profession of registered nurse is highly respected and noble profession that assists the individual who works in this designation to have the opportunities to determine social, physical and emotional needs of service users. This profession would not only provide me with opportunity to serve people with proper dignity and respect to meet their critical needs but also assist me to learn new things as well as to develop new professional skill such as communication skill, time management sill, interpersonal skill, analysing and judgemental skill and critical thinking skills. these skills are important to enhance my professional expertise by shaping my way of working. On the contrary Strömgren et al. (2016), argued that, the right profession is not the one that provides only the career and learning opportunities but also the one that assists people to improve their social and financial development in terms of improving their overall living standard. In modern healthcare field, the profession of registered nurse is highly demanded and trendy profession that provides candidates with several financial and social opportunities such as good salary, good promotional opportunities, social honour, respects and dignity, bonus and good incentives. Therefore, this profession will assist me not only hold a good social position but also to grab good financial opportunity. In addition to this, the job posting of registered nurse is generally offered in hospitals and healthcare centres that are located in urban and metropolitan areas, which will be beneficial for me to make safe and hassle-free journey everyday while going to my workplace.

Medical assistant:

This is another career goal that I need to pursue as my future profession. As mentioned by Naboychenko et al. (2020), medical assistant is highly demanding and bright career choice in today’s medial field, which provides candidates with opportunities in promoting their designation into higher level of healthcare sector and grab upper hierarchical position in this industry. Working as a medical assistant will improve my knowledge in handling of different medicines in terms of managing, executing and storing them in systematic manner. This profession will assist me how to make useful as well as understandable interaction with other medical staffs, health professionals, patients and patient’s family members. In this context, Thiele and Dunsford (2019) stated that, medical assistants are provided with highly-organised training and development process that improve their professional and personal skill. By working as medical assistant I can improve my knowledge about how to control on my emotion and empathy while dealing with patients with critical needs. On the other hand, this profession has high career as well as financial scope in modern medical field. Medical assistants are generally offered job-posting in highly accessible geographical area which will assist me to continue my work without facing any geography and transport issue.

Database administrator:

I chose database administrator as my future profession as it will assist me to get training on handling, executing and storing patient’s medical database in systematic manner. In addition to this, the profession will improve my knowledge about how to maintain confidentiality of patients’ personal and professional database. As mentioned by Lingsma et al. (2018), in today’s highly modern medical world, the profession as database administrator has high economic and careers scope. One of the biggest opportunities of this profession is that, candidates having experiences in this profession can work in any industry as a database administrator such as in IT company, entrepreneurial business and marketing firm rather confine their talents only in healthcare sector.

I have strong interactive and communication skill, that will assist me to make effective communication with my colleagues and seniors in my workplace

I have strong decision-making and problem-solving skill, that will help me I taking useful professional decision quickly in any critical situation future workplace. Problem solving skill will assist me to deal with any professional issue by using smart solution without getting scared of it.

My time management skill is strong that I can apply in any future work situation to take right decision and right choice

I have good team work skill that will assist me to adapt in any team by using proper strategies and tactics to manage team members in systematic manner

Experiences:

I have good experiences on adaptability as I worked with different students’ team while working on various university projects.

I have strong experiences on conflict management within team that I can apply in my future workplace to deal with any organisational conflict

Identification of gaps in skill:

I found out many gaps in skills, knowledge and experiences that I gathered throughout my degree course. One of the major gaps was my poor written communication skill, that made me unable to make good project documents. As stated by Rimmer (2018), gaps in written communication skill need immediate attention otherwise students cannot be able to make strong knowledge on how to write better English. Due to this poor written skill, I always handover the work of writing any project document or any other document to the other team members. This made me unable to confront this gap and I had poor knowledge in English grammar as well as sentence formation.

Another gap in my experiences and knowledge that gathered during the degree course is my poor leadership skill, that reduced my self-confidence while going to lead the team during working on different university project. My lack of self confidence in managing any team as a team leader, made a huge gap in attaining strong knowledge on different leadership and management styles and their application process in team. This can affect my future workplace, as I can face difficulties while going to lead any team with my limited knowledge and poor leadership and management styles.

There is huge gap in my knowledge as well as experiences that I gathered on Crisis management process. As mentioned by Shaheen and Hameed (2020), in professional field, crisis management is important area on which every employee needs to have strong knowledge. In my future career as healthcare staffs or medical assistant, this gap in knowledge on crisis management will put me in trouble as I would not be able to take proper risk management strategies to deal with any critical situation.

Bridging the gap:

Despite having all these gaps in my knowledge and experiences, there are many positive factors that assisted me to bridge these gaps. One of the major positive factors is that, I already have contacted with many English lecturers and professionals of different universities through social media by joining many social groups. The professors in these groups are highly supportive to provide me useful advice about how to improve my grammatical and sentence formation knowledge. In addition to this I also have discussed with my university lecturers about my poor written communication skill and get satisfied advise from them. Now I am able to bridge the gaps of English grammar and sentence formation knowledge to great extent by regular practise and assignment writing.

Currently I attend many online social events and conferences that are conducted for university students that assist me to improve my leadership and management skill by providing me useful online videos and documents on different leadership styles and their application in practical field. Additionally, I have contacted with many healthcare staff and medical assistants in my locality, with whom I discussed the leadership styles that are generally used healthcare. This discussion is also helpful to me to improve my overall understanding about the application of right leadership styles at right time.

With discussing the management professionals in the social group, I gathered good knowledge on how to manage crisis in critical situation in professional field. I also make online research on crisis management process and see the online videos of on YouTube to get clear knowledge on it.
