Embracing Chinese Language and Culture

My homeland is Kazakhstan, which borders China. Therefore, I believe that understanding Chinese will give me a deeper understanding of China-Kazakhstan relations, which at the moment is politically, economically, and culturally stable, and as well, find a job in China which is now economically developed. Immanuel Kant states that we are all citizens of the world. I strongly support this view as I identify more with mankind than a certain nationality. I am, therefore, eager to understand our modern and global world and how it functions hence my need to comprehend different cultures. Not long ago I read an article called "Central Asian ‘Characteristics' on China's New Silk Road: The Role of Landscape and the Politics of Infrastructure"; Sternberg, Ahearn, and McConnell (2017) justified that Kazakhstan is China's main passageway to Russia and Europe. To this end, I became interested in the Chinese language, and was prompted to explore Chinese culture, history and contemporary life in a more detailed way. I was amazed to discover that the Chinese language consists of about 200 dialects, where Mandarin is the most popular dialect, especially in Jung Chang as per Michael Swan’s Learner English book. Therefore, with my long interest in Chinese culture, I wish to study the Chinese language and culture at your institution.

Like any teenager in the modern world, I like watching various genre movies. Mostly, I prefer Asian dramas and historical TV series about ancient life in China. I like these films since they explore Asian culture, cuisine, and philosophy such as yin yang as well as the fundamental concepts of Daoism. It is, therefore, my dream to pursue Chinese studies at higher learning to discover more about Asia, particularly, China. I am also excited to engage with the modules about dynastic China and Cinema East. I am also determined to develop Chinese history and language’s understanding and become a professional in Chinese culture.

My mother-tongue is Kazakh, but as an individual interested in culture and linguistics, I am also fluent in both English and Russian, which makes me believe I am the most qualified candidate for this field of study. Together with these languages, I pursued the German language where I gained a pre-intermediate level in just two years of study. While still learning, due to my ability to multitask, I would also like to continue improving my fluency in German, and I believe that your world-class university will offer me this opportunity. Furthermore, I understand that Chinese is not the most spoken language in the world, hence my interest to challenge myself and study it at Cambridge and a year abroad.

One of my greatest achievements was getting the "Orken" scholarship, which is a grant offered by the first president of Kazakhstan. This scholarship fully paid for my studies at the autonomous educational organization "Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools". This institution assisted me to develop my confidence and enabled me to achieve part of my educational goals. To get this grant, I worked tirelessly to excel in English, Russian, and Mathematics tests, an ability I believe will be important during my studies at your institution. Additionally, I pursued afterschool Mathematics courses, which advanced my spatial thinking and problem-solving skills, and will be crucial in this field of study. Moreover, last year I managed to study at NIS PMD Almaty and Clifton College, at the same time to excel in my analog of IGCSE tests this summer.

During my three-months summer holidays, I looked after my 10 nephews, which developed my compassion skills and strengthened my communication ability. Through my creativity, I organized an approach of different activities as well as a point-based motivation system, where the winner received a prize. This is a leadership motivation skill that I believe will be crucial in my life. Besides, as a representative of our school’s International Student Group promoted my interest in international affairs, cultures, and languages. During my free time, I enjoy studying literature books and spending time with students from various cultural backgrounds. Additionally, I am talented in playing chess, music and piano, rhythmic gymnastics, and tennis, which when given a chance, I will actively participate in your institution's clubs.

I have long admired your esteemed institution for its crucial achievements in the teaching and research of Chinese culture. Therefore, in studying Chinese, I view my future as bright and I am determined to deepen my fascination and let others benefit from it. I also understand that in the academic environment of your institution, and under effective guidance my interest and research potential will be fully developed.
