Embracing the Significance of Chemistry in Modern Society

PERSONAL STATEMENT

Today, technology and science play a very important role in the lives of people. Both have dominated the development of every society. In my opinion, Chemistry is the most important science today. My enthusiasm for chemistry begins while visiting my mother’s chemistry lab and being curious about colorful solutions in beakers, which I later learned to be a titration reaction. Chemistry being a science of matter as well as its properties, its applications are wide and are applied to approximately all aspects of life ranging from medicine to forensics as well as the environment. This practical aspect of Chemistry has fascinated my desire to study it at a higher learning institution. My favorite aspect of chemistry is physical chemistry which utilizes mathematical knowledge to solve problems. Particularly I take it as fun while solving Enthalpy, Born-Haber cycle and acids, bases and PH questions. I also enjoy organic chemistry, especially Organic Synthesis. At higher learning institution, I am planning to solve harder and challenging questions. Since my A level, I realized that my future will mostly depend on science. Since then, I have been putting my efforts in sciences and now, I have opted to pursue bachelors of science in chemistry at your institution.

My thirst for chemistry has led me to do an Extended Project Qualification on Ethanol production. While researching, I came across a book called Renewable energy resources by John Twidell. Chapter 10.6 (Alcoholic fermentation). This chapter has greatly opened my eyes to the world of alcohol production like never before. I discovered new things such as how different crops can be used to make ethanol and the different methods used. To discover more about fermentation, I also watched a lecture on the Art of fermentation by Harvard University. I learned new and more complex mechanisms used in the fermentation process. From my curiosity, academic qualifications, and research skills, I believe I am the most qualified candidate to study bachelors of science in chemistry at your institution.

During my A level, I enjoyed practical lessons as they helped me understand most science topics. At school we carried out an experiment on thin-layer chromatography which inspired me to read an article on Chromatography and out of curiosity, I researched ways to utilize it in industrial settings. Moreover, my interest in chemistry has led me to study several online courses. Recently I completed an online course at the Open University on Science of nuclear energy, where I learned about the radioactive atoms which I believe will be useful during my studies.

Chemistry is a challenging and interesting subject. It is problem-solving orienteered and I am always excited while using my maths as well as physics knowledge in chemistry. I enjoyed studying quantum mechanics in physics and linking it with chemistry. Additionally, looking at my personality, I am a positive individual who always works hard to achieve success. Moreover, I am good at information technology which I believe, would be crucial to this field of study. Nevertheless, I strongly consider myself a flexible individual with core skills that are required to thrive in today's industrial settings.

I am also planning to go for a summer internship at a chemistry laboratory and discover new aspects of chemistry which I hope will be useful during my studies at your institution. During my sixth form, I mentored young kids where I learned to be responsible. Organizing events during my secondary school education also helped me to be innovative.

During my leisure time, I play table tennis and badminton. I also enjoy reading my favorite science books. In life, there is always more to discover therefore I am excited by the possibility of life-long learning. With my dedication and academic qualifications, I believe I am the ideal candidate to study this course at your institution. I wish to take advantage of the opportunities which will be opened for me to broaden my educational and professional skills and fulfil my dreams.
