Enhancing Deal Execution and Communication Skills

Year-End Self-Assessment statement

Throughout 2019, my soul focus has been to improve my deal execution skills and enhance my communication skills with an aim of being able to better articulate my ideas to seniors and the IC. While there are no set standards for perfect deal execution, my focus was to enhance my ideas especially with regards to carrying out due diligence processes and confidence in presentation. This year has also seen me improve my communication skills through successfully taking up a leadership role of primary/co-investment research/expert calls throughout the year; however I still believe there is space to improve my skills in presentation and sustaining conversations with GP. I look forward to learn more on this from the seniors’ presentations. I would also like to further reach out to more clients with an appetite for NB PE products and European exposure to contribute to our business as well as increase my contribution to the TfL program

Project Management and Communication

Secondary Projects: This year I have managed to work on secondary projects such as in (CVC, Cinven, PAI, and Charterhouse) where I managed opportunity funds and helped Sandeep to close on the first restructuring deal in Europe on PAI V. The deals required different dynamics in terms of the analysis and were a good learning experience for me. This should also help the London platform to continuously grow our secondary presence in Europe

Co-investments: In several co-investment deals, I have sought to analyze and address the most pertinent considerations through the investment memos. While dealing with many co-investment opportunities, I have tried to be as efficient as possible to handle consecutive multiple tasks at the same time. In 2019, I have helped the team to close 5 deals (Acteon Follow-on_KKR Europe, Palacios_MCH, Jaggaer_Cinven, Advanced_BC&Vista, Zabka_CVC).

Primaries: On primaries, I have managed to help Jose Luis to discover an attractive emerging European Healthcare focused fund, GHO Capital II, and helped him to close on the transaction. As this was an emerging manager and healthcare focused fund, it required us to go through many reference calls and work on much deeper analysis on the funds than usual. We ended up securing a spot for the fund and I believe this will give us a good co-investment opportunity in the healthcare sector going forward. On Cinven VII, as the fund is highly oversubscribed fund, I helped the seniors to go through several iterations on the fund diligence.

TFL Account Management: On the client side, first on TFL, I have administered the account on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis together with CIO presentations every 3-4 months. I believe our continuous focus on the client needs is paying off. I have also tried to pro-actively source some of potential new accounts in Korea. With very limited time sourcing on these opportunities, I have successfully secured a meeting with Samsung Life insurance London branch. Similar to our progress on MUTB or other Japanese accounts, I see some potential for us to get more meetings and slowly expand our presence among Korean accounts as well.

Having executed a number of deals alongside and in collaboration with my colleagues, I can say that I have improved on many aspects of my skill set and attitude in terms of the areas of development that were pointed out last year. However, I do acknowledge that there are further areas for me to develop and I look forward to receive constructive feedback and develop and improve myself further.
