From Passion to Pursuit

Personal Statement

In my first Business Studies lesson, I was taught that the key objective for any Business is to generate profit. Since that day, my curiosity over how businesses are able to maximise their profit through the use of strategic and tactical decisions has driven and fascinated me to pursue Business at university.

I have also realised my passion while reading ‘Good to Great’, a book written by Jim Collins that examines what it takes for an ordinary company to become great. While reading his sentence ‘good is the enemy of great’ I realised that the sentence is highly resonates with me. I am always seeking a way to improve professioally which highlights my determination as evident through my extensive eagerness to gain work experience to learn how different business environments operate. I sought out opportunities through research and applied relentlessly for access to international commercial law firms like Freshfields and Latham & Watkins. It was whilst at the latter that I was fortunate enough to meet a Facebook legal representative that introduced me to the pursuit and the power that laws have in relation to building a strong business. Moreover, working at Google where I gained experience in digital marketing and communication increased my knowledge on different types of digital platforms which businesses can use for promotions. During my time at Google I had the opportunity to take part in a Dragon Dens activity, in groups where we had to analyse gaps in the market and come up with a new app to present to the judges. This opportunity as well working in Fuse on a similar project, further developed my communication skills. In fact, planning an event for a business driven organisation at Fuse further exposed my creativity and planning skills. I also worked at ING group, an international organisation were I acquired a wide knowledge of banking as well as accounting. This opportunity taught me the importance of setting realistic prices in businesses to enable profit maximisation.

My analytical yet creative attitude leads me to appreciate my classes, especially Business. It highlighted how companies possess a fundamental part within society and the economy giving me a wide knowledge of the different business areas like marketing, business analysis, business law, entrepreneurship as well as accounting. I’m also pursuing Psychology. During my lessons and in the Psychology society club we explore the study of mental processes and behavior of individuals which helps me deal with customers or marketing products as well as helping me understand business theories to a different level, such as Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Biology on the other hand, taught me the importance of intensive reading and taking note of small details. Besides, mathematical skills has enabled me to interpret datasets and manage financial records during business lessons.

Regarding my skills, I’m self-motivated and rarely give up in difficult circumstances which is a skill required to thrive in today’s business environment. Nevertheless, I can work as a team like during student council as well as independently. When taking part in the Young Business Enterprise I worked in the marketing as well as with the finance team to develop an encrypted USB for online security. This was designed so that files are unreadable once encrypted. The experience I gained advanced my entrepreneur and multitasking skills and as well reinforced my desire to study business at a higher level to advance my knowledge about business tactics. Additiojally, the experince taught me how to solve problem, speak in public as well as strategic thinking which is required to attract customers. Working effectively together lead my team to win best product from Disney and reach the London finals.

In support of the fact that I am a hard-working, self-motivated, and enthusiastic student, I am looking forward to enduring any challenges and take advantage of all opportunities I come across during my study period. It will also be my pleasure to identify what I have observed in the workplace within academic theories.
