Pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Fashion Design

Personal statement

I feel that clothing allows you to change the way you are perceived by society more easily than anything else. By being a true style chameleon you can be anything you want to be. During childhood, I liked experimenting with styles to develop my unique looks. While growing up, I remember taking my parents' old clothes to make fashions. Additionally, my motivation in this course of study comes from my sister who is a model. Besides during my undergraduate studies, I learned digital design, VSLI design and MATLAB which created and as well-developed my graphic design patterns which fascinated me to pursue fashion styling and designing. I have realised that pursuing a fashion design degree at a university would be a great deal for me and that a UK degree is recognized worldwide, therefore, having a UK qualification will help me make my dreams come true. Besides, the opportunity to study overseas would certainly broaden my overall knowledge; both academically and personally. Therefore, with my long interest in fashion, I wish to apply for a bachelor's degree in fashion design at your institution.

Fashion is a program which introduces students to a variety of fashion industry aspects and as well introduces learners to practical techniques. Some of the course modules which also motivates me to study this field of study include fashion branding, fashion styling, fashion and culture. From my educational background, I have always been excelling students. For instance, I pursued BSEB from Adarsh high school, Hajipur where I scored an aggregate of 55.40 / 100.00. From these studies, I learned to be creative and problem-solving skills which I believe are critical in the fashion design course. Moreover, I pursued my 12th grade in BSEB at RBS College where I learned leadership skills, working under pressure while keeping quality. Besides, I pursued B.E - Electronics & Communication Engineering at University Institute of Engineering & Technology where I scored a CGPA of 7.09 / 10.00. From this course, I learned to be a positive individual who always strives to achieve the best. Moreover, from learning, algorithms developed my ability to come up with attractive patterns which I believe makes me the most qualified candidate to study this field of study. Thought-out my life, I have also been successful in several events such as achieving top third in the merit list in intermediate school, received JAGRAN scholarship 2014, and state-level kathak dance first runner up during high school. However, this does not mean I have not faced challenges in life. Since I come from a very humble background, my family has been experiencing challenges in raising finances for my education. To support my family in raising fund for my education at University, I used to couch 10 and 12 students from class to class. Am therefore planning to apply for financial assistance once I am enrolled.

From my quest to learn, I have attended several seminars and workshops such as Internet of things, a seminar which was held at National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology, Java training at excellence technology, digital design using VERILOG (summer training) which was held at C-Dac Mohali, Avr Microcontroller held at UIET and among other seminars, I attended WEB-DEV where I learned how to design innovative user-friendly website.. Moreover, due to my love for information technology, I undertook internship position at fataa-fat, where I was tasked with doing marketing of the app and web site at a different location in Chandigarh to promote the app.

Looking at my personality I have a strong command in information technology and able to work with software such as VSLI design and MATLAB which I believe, would be crucial to this field of study. Nevertheless, I strongly consider myself a flexible individual with core skills that are required to thrive in today’s design atmosphere. In my professional experience, I have been a general body member for Pukaar Welfare Association where I was tasked with public media and relationship and also handled social media accounts. From this organization, I gained cooperation skills, social awareness skills, teamwork skills and social adaptability which I believe suits my future role in the design. Additionally, I worked at MySahayta as an intern marketing promotion personnel which taught me communication skills and public speaking skills. This role I believe is crucial to my learning and my career in design promotion. Furthermore, I have undertaken several projects such as designing and building a prototype for cardless ATM controller using the Verilog design, designing and building the prototype for efficiently monitoring power and energy using IoT and designing and building the prototype for innovative dustbin(smart bin) using IoT. Some of my extracurricular activities include Organizing committee member at effi cycle in 2014, where I organized fashion event including dress, theme selection and styling, infrastructure committee member of Goonj in 2015, where I was in charge of designing and decorating all events, hospitality member of Goonj in 2016, and sports committee member 2016. During my free time, I like teaching kids, listening to music, travelling, and playing badminton. Besides all my extra-curricular activities I was also active at school and college. I had an opportunity to participate in the various fashion shows and events. I was always the person who helped teachers with various projects, decorations and creating ideas for my school's events and this gave me a great sense of responsibility while working with other students.

Lastly, I have long admired your esteemed institution for its crucial achievements in the teaching fashion design. I also understand that in the academic environment of your institution and under effective guidance my passion for design will be fully developed. Therefore, I firmly believe that your University would equip me with the requisite skill set to progress towards my career ambitions. Lastly, after completion of my studies, I plan to return to India and begin working in the fashion industry. I hope to apply the learned skills and help consumers better understand people’s choice of styling and brands.
