Reflective Review on Employability Skills

Introduction

Employability skills are required for all the participants in order to improve own capabilities to perform better in the academic and professional career (Karim and Maat, 2019). Through acquiring the employability skills, the participants can develop own understanding and acknowledge the tactics of managing their working activities and own responsibilities within time (Eldeen et al., 2018). The article is mainly a self-reflective assessment for acquiring different employability skill to overcome own inefficacy and maximise the productivity of the person in the academic and professional career. The study mainly focuses on Dona’s inefficacy to manage time and complete the assessment within the allocated time. She has faced several issues in time management where the assessment must be submitted on Wednesday. It is really difficult for her to manage time and organise the working activities so that she would be able to submit the assignment within the deadline. The self-reflective assessment is hereby effective to identify the important employability skill as well as utilise Gibb’s reflective model for sharing own experience of Dona. It will also provide a scope to recommend suitable solution for personal and professional skill development so that Dona would be efficient in near future to achieve success in her life. Essential employability skills

Employability skill set is crucial for the participants to perform better and maximise own abilities in achieving success in personal and professional career. Most important employability skills are time management skill, communication skill, critical thinking skill, team working skill, as well As planning and organising skill set (Azmi, Hashim and Yusoff, 2018). Time management is the process of organising and planning the individual divide time between the specific activities in daily life to meet the academic or professional objectives. Good time management enables the individual to work smarter and complete the assignments within the allocated time. It is the responsibility of Dona to submit the assignment on Wednesday and she must work hard and smart to complete the assignment within the allocated time. In addition to this, the critical thinking skill is mandatory in order to complete the academic courses, where the student can think critically and analyse the gathered information and data for completing the academic courses (Aliu and Aigbavboa, 2021). The participants must develop good understanding over the academic knowledge and subject matter of interest in order to perform better. Through problem solving and decision making practice, the participants can develop thinking process and analyse the gathered information critically for developing a good assignment. Moreover, the communication skill is playing a crucial role in order to cooperate with others and interact with other students, peers and other teaching professionals in order to improve own understanding and develop knowledge and expertise to perform better.

Hence, for Dona, it is mandatory to develop the employability skill set in order to perform better and complete the assignment within the located time. In this regard, Dona should have the skill of good team work as well as planning and organising so that she can perform better by cooperation and collaboration with the team members and peers. The team working skill is beneficial for the participants to share the ideas and skill with others, cooperate with the peers and other teaching professionals and improve group discussion in order to complete the assignment within the allocated time (Singh and Singh, 2019). On the other hand, the participants must have the skill set of planning and organising, which is also beneficial in daily life to work efficiently and complete each tasks within time (Katyani and Jayakani, 2020). It is important to plan the daily routine and organise the working activities for ensuring timely day to day operations. Hence, the individuals are trying to develop employability skill in order to manage own tasks and also complete the allocated working activities within time. It further improves the productivity and performance of the individual in long run. Dona faced so many issues in managing her daily routine, for which she fails to complete the assignments within time. The quality of the assignment is also not up to the mark, as she cannot access the class notes and she lacks important information and knowledge to perform better and meet the assignment standard.

Identifying Donna’s time management problems

There are lots of time management problems for which Dona faced the issues to complete the assignment within allocated time. Donna is studying Certificate in Higher Education skills for the Workplace course in UWTSD, and she started to work on the assignment Friday evening, where the deadline of submitting the task is on Wednesday. She started the assignment by reading the information and felt that she requires some class notes and information to perform better in the tasks. She started to read the textbooks on Monday and it naturally becomes hard for her to understand the context of the study to complete the assignment. Saturday was a busy schedule for her, as she went to meet her friends at 11.00 to do some practice of softball. After that, On Sunday she went to church in the morning and visited her aunt and uncle in the afternoon, which is also a busy schedule to manage study on that day. She felt to seek advice from the teaching professionals, and she called her tutor, but the tutor was not available at that time. Only two days left, Monday and Tuesday, where she thought to do quick work, but it further hampers the quality of the assignment, due to lack of knowledge and skill set. Even on Monday, she woke up late after 8 a.m., as she forgot to set the alarm clock. She half runs, half walks to work, but it is already 8.45, when she reaches the clinic, and Dona is 15 minutes late. Hence, it is clearly explore that, she is quiet casual to the assignment and the classwork activities, for which she faced difficulties to meet the quality of the assessment, due to poor understanding and lack of availability of the class notes, she cannot perform efficiently in the assignment. On the other hand, the time management skill is poor for which Dona cannot complete the task efficiently within Wednesday. She failed to plan and organise her daily life activities, where she must quit sport practice on Saturday and visiting to Aunt’s home on Sunday. These are the major problems for which Dona failed to manage time and complete the task by maintaining the assignment quality.

Time management strategy by 4D model

4D model refers to Do, Defer (Delay), Delegate, and Delete (Drop), which helps the individual to manage the time for completing the allocated tasks within time. The 4D model is helpful for Dona to manage time in completing the assignment within Wednesday, and as per the feedback she also fails to plan and organise the daily activities, where this model is helpful to improve the time management skill and support Dona to manage time for further assignment for achieving the academic success. Doing is the first stage of this model, where the individual must accomplish quickly about a series of small tasks that mainly builds the momentum for working on the larger projects and in this regard, responding to the email, returning phone calls and printing the project immediately or clearing doubts are mandatory to progress in the paper. Deferring or delaying the unnecessary activities must be managed well, to progress in the project efficiently (Di Gregorio et al., 2019). The individual must plan and organise the task on the basis of the urgency and develop a successful schedule for completing the allocated tasks within time. Delegating is the third stage, where the individual redesign the essential activities in a project by enhancing cooperation and communication with the expert team members in order to deliver the best quality work (Griffin and Coelhoso, 2019). Deleting the unnecessary tasks for the schedule and moving on to the success is essential for achieving success. The model is hereby effective to manage time and delay or delete the unnecessary activities during that schedule so that the allocated tasks can be conducted within time.

Description

The tasks are allocated to me to complete the assignment within Wednesday and it is my responsibility to maintain the standard of the assignment and submit error free work. For completing the coursework successfully and achieving academic success, it is my duty to complete the assignment within time, however, it is my fault that I fail to manage time and also there is lack of understanding and knowledge for which cannot perform efficiently. I was busy on Saturday and Sunday, and for which I did not concentrate on my work. I required roe time to study the class notes and materials for performing better in the assignment, but due to lack of time management skill, I fail to develop suitable schedule to manage my work.

Feeling

I feel that, it was my fault that I could not manage the time table of my daily routine. I woke up late on Monday and also it was a busy schedule on Saturday and Sunday, which should not be happened on such urgency. I should concentration my project rather than going for practice and aunt’s home on Sunday. It is really disappointing that I cannot perform well in completing the assignment efficiently. My academic marks will be hampered of such delay and low quality standard. I also fail to manage time for studying the class notes and collecting suitable information to develop the assignment and this further leads me towards lower marks and poor quality of assignment. I feel regret that I fail to develop my employability skills of time management, critical thinking and communication skill.

Evaluation

The good experience is that somehow manage the assignment and complete it within the allocated time, but the quality standard of the assignment is not good which hamper the academic performance. My major weakness during the coursework is that lack of communication and cooperation skill set as well as poor time management skill and lack of critical analytical skill. For these weaknesses, I fail to improve my knowledge and ability to perform better in the assignment and complete the study within the deadline.

Analysis

It is mandatory for the participants to develop time management skill, so that they can understand the urgency of the tasks and prioritise the work of better schedule. The participants also requires to develop own academic knowledge by gathering fruitful information from the teaching professionals and collect books, journals and articles for improving own abilities to perform better.

Conclusion

Through the discussion, it is revealed that, I fail to manage timing and rather it was my mistake to create good planning during the assignment. It is not relevant to me to go out and waste two days, as the submission date is lose and it was difficult for me to perform efficiently due to lack of knowledge and expertise. Due to lack of time management skill as well as inability to plan and organise the working activities, I fail to complete the assignment with high educational standard which deteriorate the quality, though I somehow manage to submit this within Wednesday.

Action plan

I would like to develop my critical thinking skill so that it would be possible for me to gather information, arrange the class notes and critically analyse the information for improving my knowledge and expertise to perform better and complete the assignment by maintaining its quality. It would be beneficial for me to prioritise the work during the urgency, and avoid any going out, wasting time or gossiping so that I can concentrate on studying and complete the assignment within deadlines. Planning the project and gathering information through god communication and cooperation with the teaching professionals and the friends are necessary to meet the project deadlines. Hence, I would like to improve my communication skill so that I can share my ideas and gather vast range of creative information to perform better in the assignment and complete it within effective time.
