Transfer Application to Goldsmiths University for Sociology Degree

PERSONAL STATEMENT

It is said that the environment in which we grow up dictates our possibilities and future. This notion implies that social institutions are used to maintain the current social hierarchies. This led me to choose to study BA, Sociology, which is the empirical and sociological study of society. Nevertheless, "A goal without a strategy is just a wish”, as per Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Based on my character and career goals, I do not consider myself a wishful thinker, rather, I consider myself an individual of a practical approach. When I was applying for my sociology degree, University of Kent was the most appropriate and the best option due to its strategic position from my residence. However, I have realized my interest and goals, and feel that the University of Kent is no longer appropriate for the goals towards which am working. For this reason, guided by my interest and passions, I am writing this personal statement to apply for a transfer from my current university where I am in the second year of my Sociology undergraduate degree to your institution. Though the University of Kent is one of the best institutions globally, I believe that offered a chance at your institution would be a great honour and would help me achieve my goals and ambition. First, Goldsmiths University has the best teaching staff who would provide the best practical lessons for me to meet my targets, and as well learn the application of sociology’s key methods to certain areas of life. Additionally, the university is higher ranked compared to my current institution due to its research abilities, performance, and departments which hosts a number of research centres, units, and groups. For instance, your institution has a long history of sociological research which I believe would be appropriate to flourish my dreams. Nevertheless, your institution has a highly organised political and socially conscious student body, which is lacking at my current institution. Lastly, your university is a creative powerhouse which lets students draw their own conclusions.

I am a highly motivated young woman who is innovative with strong interpersonal and communication skills. Additionally, I am a highly organised individual and able to efficiently prioritise and multi-task. Besides, I have fantastic writing skills, extensive knowledge of social media in addition to my excellent command in information technology. Based on experience, I have been a social media intern at Tender Education and Arts, a speaker at a conference -Feminism in Schools Conference and among others, I have worked as a Co-Facilitator, at a Research Project in Victoria Showunmi. All these experiences have taught me various skills on how to interact and deal with society.

At my current university, I have learned Sociologic Theory, which has helped me relate sociology and real life, Sociology of Everyday Life, and Critical Thinking as a unit which has taught me analytical skills. During my A-level, I learned; Biology, History, English Literature, and Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which I believe created my interest in sociology and as well, inspired my decision to study sociology. As per Samuel Johnson “the next best thing to knowing something is having knowledge where to find it.” Therefore, I believe this institution is where my dreams will be unlocked.
