Reflection on Process

The script presented, titled as ‘The Economy’ focuses on a conversation among three characters, Terry, Michael, and a woman who later on identifies herself as Lydia. The theme of ‘economy’ is selected because in many nations, the economy is becoming a pressing concern. Even the International Monetary Fund (IMF) published a blog post which indicated that the world economy has been on a synchronized slow down. This synchronized slow down can be attested to by the declining of world economic growth by 3% in 2019. This pace is determined to be the slowest since the occurrence of the world financial crisis (Gopinath, 2019). As the script grows, Michael, a computer technician who works in the main city, acquires a customer, known as Terry, who needs to have his laptop fixed due to speed concerns. Michael has felt his business slow down over the previous months, and it has affected his ability to provide for his family at him at a twofold. Initially, he used to rake in at least 3000 shillings in a day, but in the recent days, he struggles to make even 1000 shillings.

Reflection on Form

This script has one scene, specifically at Michael’s All-Tech Solutions shop in town. The shop is found in a block in one of the busy streets in town which results in pollution of the atmosphere. There are a total of three characters, Terry, Michael and Lydia (who walks in later on into the shop). Terry’s and Lydia’s laptops have similar problems concerning the speeds of their laptops and they approach Michael to have it fixed for them. Michael is present to initiate the conversation regarding the economy. Terry is present to contribute to the topic, and Lydia is present to offer a whole new and different outlook of the economy. Lydia’s outlook is different because she is pursuing higher education. The setting is in All-Tech solutions in the city – a place where many other businesses are run, including transport.

The overall effect of the setting and characters is to show how Terry is a software developer who has an interest in doing research work all his life, but due to the economy, has not had the right opportunity to do so. Therefore, he studies research by himself. Lydia, on the other hand, runs her own consultancy firm which majors in research work. Although Lydia’s presence is coincidental, she appears to have come at the right time as an additional customer in need of Michael’s services and as a networking partner for Terry.

Reflection on Craft Manuals and Scholarship

As much as they are considered to be works of art, scripts for television are also regarded as technical documents. A script could be visually appealing, and easy to read through, but it could be considered unfilmable particularly because of the manner in which it was written. Since the script is like a blueprint used in the creation of something that is of more significance, one of the crucial steps that needs to be taken in preparing this kind of technical document is by developing the characters (Sierra, 2012). In the script presented, the characters have been developed by the use of backstories and refining of their personalities as the dialogue builds up.
