Mental health nursing is a nursing practice sector that offers care to people with mental health disorders to assist them improve their lifestyle or recover. Mental health nurses are required to have advanced knowledge of mental health diagnosis, assessment, and treatment. These professionals work alongside other medical professionals to provide optimal clinical outcomes for an individual. Specifically, their roles include evaluating and assessing a patient’s mental health, developing a treatment care plan, consulting with other medical care professionals about the treatment plan, and sometimes being part of a multidisciplinary team (Macaskill, 2013). To treat mental illness, mental nurses are trained to use psychotherapy, pharmaceutical medications, and other treatment strategies to help patients improve. Other than treatment, nurses have an essential role in developing effective relationships with patients and their families. Blythe and White (2012) state that mental health nurse success comes from the ability to establish trusting relationships quickly and to help individuals understand their condition and available treatment options. Therefore, the mental health nurse course is designed to transform health and social care practice through education and research. For an individual to work as a registered nurse in mental health, one has to possess a degree or diploma in mental health from a recognizable university and be registered with bodies like the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) (Macaskill, 2013). University education is critical in preparing an individual to expand their professional roles in the health care system.

Since a long time ago, I have been fascinated by Mental Health Nursing. Additionally, from the skills, I discovered that mental health was my career path. Mental health is also one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, enabling me to combine helping people's mental wellbeing with their physical health. Likewise, as a humble and hardworking individual, I am motivated to change mental health care and improve how patients are treated in rural areas. Using my role as a Mental Health practitioner to promote mental health illness to mental health patients, more specifically in rural areas, can be very fulfilling.

Therefore, after graduation, I aspire to be employed in the position of psychiatric nurse in a hospital setting to improve my skills, capacity, and knowledge to handle patients. My objective is to gain extensive experience in case management and build an effective relationship with patients and their families. Kelly et al. (2011) state that mental health in rural areas has been neglected for a long time and is a serious challenge to national health care. Regardless of the neglect, I believe that living with mental illness is not easy and can result in chronic stress, which has been linked to a higher risk of strokes, obesity, and heart attacks. Therefore, acquiring the necessary skills and relocating to rural areas to work with the local community to improve health care would be a very fulfilling task for me. Therefore, after gaining effective skills, I will combine working from the hospital and visiting the client's home to provide mental services.

Also, I am fascinated to be a psychiatric nurse in a result-oriented mental health care organization (elderly home) where I will be able to use and acquire nursing abilities and other skills to improve patients care. This position will increase my ability to handle mentally ill patients and effectively communicate with them, and help them recover from mental disorders. Poreddi et al. (2020) states that Psychiatric Nurse is expected to have key skills like the ability to promote good health and fitness, empathize, effective understanding of theories, and ability to apply them resilience and stamina. This qualification is achieved from learning and practicing in relevant mental health institutions.

Furthermore, I wish to join an online skills development course to develop my skills. I have realized that mental nurse is unique since working with individuals who do not have the mental capacity to think rationally is not easy. Therefore I need to develop my communication skills, leadership and critical thinking skills, among other skills. Also, I need to develop skills in group therapy, leadership skills, and other therapy skills via my learning. Development of skills would ensure that I meet clients' requirements and develop a professional relationship for effective healing.

Role Analysis

Psychiatry and psychiatric nursing date back to the ancient philosophical philosophers. Marcus Tullius Cicero is believed to be the first known individual to create a questionnaire to treat mental illness and use biographical information to assess best psychological care (Caldwell et al., 2010). Similarly, one of the oldest psychiatric care centers were constructed by 8th century in the Middle East. By the 13th century, the first psychiatric hospitals were built in Europe to host mentally ill patients. However, the facility lacked nurses; thus, treatment was rarely provided. By 1913 Johns Hopkins University started offering the first psychiatric nursing, and the first psychiatric nursing textbook in 1920 by Harriet Bailey. By the 19th century, the patient population rose dramatically, and nurses were forced to work for many hours until labor organizations created to fight for better pay and improved working condition (Caldwell et al., 2010).

Today, mental health nursing is a highly rewarding profession and highly developing. Studies show that about one in four people experiences mental health problems every year (Pfefferbaum & North, 2020). On the other hand, the number of graduates is increasing tremendously due to increased institutions offering mental health nursing. Therefore, the increase in the number of trained personnel competition is very high, while new graduates' demand is low. Therefore employers often employees the most talented and competent employees. Some of the common task by mental health nurse today includes planning and assessing nursing care needs, organizing workloads, visiting patients at home, and creating effective relationships with patients and their families. Therefore, with many roles, employers choose result-driven, positive, proactive employees and with great ability to work in fast-paced environments while meeting deadlines. Other qualities checked by the employers include excellent communication skills, information technology, and individuals who are professional, reliable, and punctual (Kumar et al., 2011). Therefore it is evident that the most talented employees are most suitable for the job market.
