Professional Values In Nursing

Introduction:

Professional values in nursing can be defined as the moral principles that nurses need to implement in their practices to uphold their professional accountability towards their patients and colleagues (Alligood and Fawcett, 2017). This study will discuss two important nursing values and their application into practices to improve the preference of nursing profession.

Professional values

Professional values in nursing can be described as the ethical codes that need to be implemented and applied effectively into practices to improve the quality of care, enhance performance standard and comply with the professional norms (Callwood et al. 2018). NHS (2018) has set 6C’s nursing professional values which includes six core values in nursing field that nursing professionals must implement in their practices to promote their professional accountability and integrity towards their profession. These nursing values are care, compassion, competence, courage, communication and commitment. According to Graham et al. (2020), through applying nursing values into practices nursing professionals can maintain high level of professionalism in their performance. Effectives implementation of all nursing values into practice enables nursing professionals not only to provide the high quality care to their patients to meet their health needs but also assists nurses to comply with healthcare regulations and professional norms to meet the standard of nurse profession. Thorough applying all professional values into practices nurses are able to develop positive thoughts, good behaviour, positive decision making and optimistic belief.

Two nursing values:

The two important nursing values that this study is going to discuss are, competence and care. NMC (2018) recommended that, nurses must be enough competent in understanding the health and social care regulation and different nursing norms. As mentioned by Schmidt and McArthur (2018), nurses need to have the competence in determining and meeting holistic needs of clients. NMC (2018) mentioned that, while it comes to uphold their competence, nursing professionals must have the processional skill and knowledge that are required to maintain a good professional relationship with their clients and colleagues. Nurses must be enough competent in maintaining an effective communication with their client and colleagues which will enables them to maintain a transparent information delivery system within the care framework. NMC (2018), recommend that nurses must work under their best level of competence to ensure patients’ safety. In this context Sibandze and Scafide (2018) mentioned that, nurses must ensure that they have the professional ability and knowledge on the techniques and process that they are using in serving patients to ensure safety of patients.

Care is the important professional values in nursing practice. NMC (2018) mentioned that, nursing professionals must provide the compassionate and high quality care to patients. While providing care, nurses must ensure that care delivery is free from any kind of biases and discrimination. As mentioned by Skela‐Savič et al. (2017), nurses must ensure that they treat each patient equality with proper dignity and respect irrespective of patients’ caste, race, religions, ethnicity and economic condition. Nurses must ensure that care delivery is high relevant to the health condition and the health needs of patients.

Conclusion:

From the above-mentioned discussion it can be concluded that, professional values in nursing are the ethical and moral principles that need to be implemented into practices. Though applying all professional values into practices, nursing professionals can improve the care delivery, meet the professional standard, comply with all the nursing norms and improve their professional accountability. Through upholding and implementing professional values nurses are able to maintain high level of professionalism with their colleagues and clients which enables them to show professional integrity towards them.
