The Media Circus: Examining the Unfortunate Miscarriage of Justice in Alice Sebold's Narrative

The Lovely Bones is an excellent novel. One of the great realizations that the great novel did not die with Ulysses. The spoilt reader puts her index finger gently on the seams of this novel, matching a dress made in the best fashion. The reader runs her fingers on the even lines of the seams. It is immaculate and faultless. As it happens, its author is quite the opposite. Unfortunately, she has all the frailties of a human and even worse. A woman that goes hand in hand with falling easy prey to be blamed, victimized, sacrificed, burned, deprived, buried quite literally. It is somehow ironic that the author of one of the masterfully written works of art is so fast and effortlessly reduced to the victim role again.

The gist is that she was raped in her youth, and most readers preferably repress the knowledge that most women fall prey to some violence is autonomous. Reverse statistics of men falling prey to the victim are nearly non-existent. Any complaint from the female gender is acceptable to be a reality. The feministic world trusts anything the female portrays to be the truth if it has been done by a man. The media and the public, in general, have generally accepted men to be the prey on anything female inequalities. Go and find three scientific, valid, and unquestionable statistics on the gender distribution of violence. Most importantly, get any compiled by men and let me know what you have found. If you find out that violence is distributed evenly, please contact me. I will support you to move to another globe where you can roam wildly with your mates.

Getting back to the story. Alice got raped in her youth, which resulted in trauma. Later she recognized a man on the street and thought of him as her rapist. The man got convicted and sat in prison for 16 years. It is horrifying, as he turned out to be an innocent man whose life got shattered by this mistake. But again, whose mistake, was it? No one came into the defense of the man. Everyone accepted the claim that he is the one who raped Alice. The feminist approach is the coherent reason that led to the man being unlawfully imprisoned.

Is a victim who suffers a trauma expected to be disinterested, impartial, objective, and faultless like her novel? If anything, she has done her duty by calling attention. The attention is directed to the fact that a man might put others in danger is strolling free. The mystery lies with the flexibility of the legal boundaries. The burden of proof did not lay with her but on the regime. The regime, in this case, includes the judiciary, the defense, prosecution, and the judges. The regime trusted what she said that what he said. The “he” suffered because the “she” is perceived by many to be right and prone to attack. However, the defective mechanisms, lack of corrective measures, and proper procedures are the source of the judicial inequalities. Corrigible practices and measures put into practice on surveying the mechanisms of the justice systems should reveal how an innocent man is being punished for someone else’s crime.

Reading the headlines, every newspaper had the same treatment of the topic, which was disappointing. They found nothing else crucial in the whole story. Only the fact that the one who should not apologize apologized. Alice happily contributed to being assigned the victim role. I was equally stunned by the headlines. The victim had to blame despite having done nothing towards her rape incidence. What a rubbish world we live in with this tilted sense of justice. The Guardian, The New York Times, The National News, Metro, the BBC, Euro News, and The Insider are writing the same story. On the other hand, The New Statesman reported ‘How the system failed Anthony Broad water and Alice Sebold. Kudos to The New Statesman.

I think many professional bodies owe an apology to this man. Alice Sebold should not be granted an apology. Both were victimized and let down by the system, judiciary, police, journalists, by the system and the media. If anything, they should ally as they are on the same side. Everyone else under the less benevolent surface is out to get them. Both would deserve an apology but not by Alice Sebold. Netflix should make a film about how blood-thirsty this society is. It should not be less cruel than the Maya tradition that would ceremonially tear the heart out of living victims.

Alice Sebold, a distinguished writer, I could say if she as a woman, she is just a writer of a perfect novel. Only a man can be distinguished by anything he claims to have achieved. By a unique and harrowing, slightly demented pride about his testosterone drives only, he apologized to this man. Netflix was going to make a film of her autobiography, and the blunder, as the narrative goes, it got withdrawn. In other words, a long-suffering artist who almost made it to financial safety, out of the gross negligence of others, journalists, representatives of the legal profession, media, society, loses her chance to create a safe haven. The safe heaven could be where she can write otherworldly pieces of art, where she could lose the vulnerability. The vulnerability that would always single her out to take the blame for whatever happens and remains struggling for her life. Until she draws her last breath, without anyone noticing the ongoing cruelty and the culture that knows the compassion but forgot its meaning, the cruelty shall reoccur and prevail.
