The expansion is also expected to upgrade the air traffic movements from 38 to 45 movements per hour and enable increased annual passenger movements from 4.8 to 6.5 million passengers by 2025.

Progress of Expansion

Given the limited amount of space for the expansion, the project is scheduled to reclaim the dock and develop new land for the expansions above the dock waters of King George V dock (Finlay, 2019). The expansion is scheduled t be developed on 75,000 square meter concrete deck built over the waters of the Dock.

Currently the development of the concrete decks is underway in 4 of the 5 sections identified within the site as highlighted by Airport Technology (2018) the decks will be supported by over one thousand steel and concrete piles in the waters of the dock. According to the London City Airport senior PR manager Andrew Scott, the construction of the piers are underway with up to 80 of them already installed in place.

Aland based expansion to the west of the Current terminal is also under construction despite being a much smaller in scale expansion.
